The stories became far too frequent to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emails from folks with allergic or digestive issues to wheat in\nthe United States experienced no symptoms whatsoever when they tried eating\npasta on vacation in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confused parents wondering why wheat consumption sometimes\ntriggered autoimmune reactions in their children but not at other times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my own home, I\u2019ve long pondered why my husband can eat\nthe Wheat I prepare at\nhome, but he experiences negative digestive effects eating even a single roll\nin a restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is clearly something going on with wheat that is not well\nknown by the general public. It goes far and beyond organic versus nonorganic,\ngluten or hybridization because even conventional wheat triggers no symptoms\nfor some who eat wheat in other parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What indeed is going on with wheat?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For quite some time, I secretly harbored the notion that wheat in\nthe United States must, in fact, be genetically modified.  GMO wheat\nsecretly invading the North American food supply seemed the only thing\nthat made sense and could account for the varied experiences I was hearing\nabout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reasoned that it couldn\u2019t be the gluten or wheat hybridization.\nGluten and wheat hybrids have been consumed for thousands of years. It just\ndidn\u2019t make sense that this could be the reason for so many people suddenly\nhaving problems with wheat and gluten in general in the past 5-10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the answer came over dinner a couple of months ago with\na friend who was well versed in the wheat production process. I started\nresearching the issue for myself, and was, quite frankly, horrified at what I\ndiscovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good news is that the reason wheat has become so toxic in the\nUnited States is not because it is secretly GMO as I had feared (thank\ngoodness!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bad news is that the problem lies with the manner in which\nwheat is grown and harvested by conventional wheat farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re going to want to sit down for this one.  I\u2019ve had\nsome folks burst into tears in horror when I passed along this information\nbefore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common wheat harvest protocol in the United States\nis to drench the wheat fields with Roundup several days before the combine\nharvesters work through the fields as the practice allows for an earlier,\neasier and bigger harvest <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pre-harvest application of the herbicide Roundup or other herbicides\ncontaining the deadly active ingredient glyphosate to wheat and barley as a\ndesiccant was suggested as early as 1980.  It has since become routine\nover the past 15 years and is used as a drying agent 7-10 days before harvest\nwithin the conventional farming community.<\/p>\n\n\n

According to Dr. Stephanie Seneff of MIT who has studied the issue in depth<\/a> and who I recently saw present\non the subject at a nutritional Conference in Indianapolis,\ndesiccating non-organic wheat crops with glyphosate just before harvest\ncame into vogue late in the 1990\u2019s with the result that most of the non-organic\nwheat in the United States is now contaminated with it.  Seneff explains\nthat when you expose wheat to a\ntoxic chemical like glyphosate, it actually releases more seeds resulting in a\nslightly greater yield:  <\/strong> \u201cIt \u2018goes to seed\u2019 as it\ndies. At its last gasp, it releases the seed\u201d <\/em>says Dr. Seneff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the US Department of Agriculture, as of 2012, 99% of\ndurum wheat, 97% of spring wheat, and 61% of winter wheat has been treated with\nherbicides. This is an increase from 88% for durum wheat, 91% for spring wheat\nand 47% for winter wheat since 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what Wheat farmer\nKeith Lewis has to say about the\npractice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been a\nwheat farmer for 50 yrs and one wheat production practice that is very common\nis applying the herbicide Roundup (glyposate) just prior to harvest. Roundup is\nlicensed for preharvest weed control. Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup\nclaims that application to plants at over 30% kernel moisture result in roundup\nuptake by the plant into the kernels. Farmers like this practice because\nRoundup kills the wheat plant allowing an earlier harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wheat field\noften ripens unevenly, thus applying Roundup preharvest evens up the greener\nparts of the field with the more mature. The result is on the less mature areas\nRoundup is translocated into the kernels and eventually harvested as such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This practice is not licensed. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Farmers\nmistakenly call it \u201cdessication.\u201d Consumers eating products made from wheat\nflour are undoubtedly consuming minute amounts of Roundup. An interesting\naside, malt barley which is made into beer is not acceptable in the marketplace\nif it has been sprayed with preharvest Roundup. Lentils and peas are not\naccepted in the market place if it was sprayed with preharvest roundup\u2026.. but\nwheat is ok.. This farming practice greatly concerns me and it should further\nconcern consumers of wheat products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what wheat farmer Seth Woodland of Woodland and Wheat<\/a> in Idaho had to say\nabout the practice of using herbicides for wheat dry down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That practice is bad. I have fellow farmers around\nme that do it and it is sad. Lucky for you not all of us farm that way.\nBeing the farmer and also the president of a business, we are proud to say that\nwe do not use round up on our wheat ever!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This practice is not just widespread in the United States either.\nThe Food Standards Agency in the United Kingdom reports that use of Roundup as\na wheat desiccant results in glyphosate residues regularly<\/em> showing\nup in bread samples. Other European countries are waking up to to the danger,\nhowever. In the Netherlands, use of Roundup is completely banned with France\nlikely soon to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using Roundup on wheat crops throughout the entire growing season\nand even as a desiccant just prior to harvest may save the farmer money and\nincrease profits, but it is devastating to the health of the consumer who\nultimately consumes the glyphosate residue laden wheat kernels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chart below of skyrocketing\napplications of glyphosate to US wheat crops since 1990 and the incidence of\nceliac disease is from a December 2013 Study<\/a> published\nin the Journal Interdisciplinary Toxicology examining glyphosate\npathways to autoimmune disease. Remember that wheat\nis not currently GMO or \u201cRoundup Ready\u201d meaning it is not resistant to its\nwithering effects like GMO corn or GMO soy, so application of glyphosate to\nwheat would actually kill it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the herbicide industry maintains that glyphosate is\nminimally toxic to humans, research published in the Journal Entropy<\/em><\/a> strongly\nargues otherwise by shedding light on exactly how glyphosate disrupts mammalian\nphysiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authored by Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff of MIT, the paper\ninvestigates glyphosate\u2019s inhibition of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, an overlooked\ncomponent of lethal toxicity to mammals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The currently accepted view is that ghyphosate is not harmful to\nhumans or any mammals.  This flawed view is so pervasive in the\nconventional farming community that Roundup salesmen have been known to\nfoolishly drink it during presentations!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, just because Roundup doesn\u2019t kill you immediately\ndoesn\u2019t make it nontoxic.  In fact, the active ingredient in Roundup\nlethally disrupts the all important shikimate pathway found in beneficial gut\nmicrobes which is responsible for synthesis of critical amino acids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friendly gut bacteria, also called probiotics, play a critical\nrole in human health. Gut bacteria aid digestion, prevent permeability of the\ngastointestinal tract (which discourages the development of autoimmune\ndisease), synthesize vitamins and provide the foundation for robust immunity.\n In essence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roundup significantly disrupts the functioning of\nbeneficial bacteria in the gut and contributes to permeability of the\nintestinal wall and consequent expression of autoimmune disease symptoms<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In synergy with disruption of the biosynthesis of important amino\nacids via the shikimate pathway, glyphosate inhibits the cytochrome P450 (CYP)\nenzymes produced by the gut microbiome.  CYP enzymes are critical to human\nbiology because they detoxify the multitude of foreign chemical compounds,\nxenobiotics, that we are exposed to in our modern environment today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, humans exposed to glyphosate through use of Roundup\nin their community or through ingestion of its residues on industrialized food\nproducts become even more vulnerable to the damaging effects of other chemicals\nand environmental toxins they encounter!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s worse is that the negative impact of glyphosate\nexposure is slow and insidious over months and years as inflammation gradually\ngains a foothold in the cellular systems of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consequences of this systemic inflammation are most of the\ndiseases and conditions associated with the Western lifestyle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gastrointestinal disorders<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obesity<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diabetes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heart Disease<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depression<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autism<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Infertility<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cancer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multiple Sclerosis<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the list goes on and on and on \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a nutshell, Dr. Seneff\u2019s study of Roundup\u2019s\nghastly glyphosate which the wheat crop in the United States is doused with\nuncovers the manner in which this lethal toxin harms the human body by\ndecimating beneficial gut microbes with\nthe tragic end result of disease, degeneration, and widespread suffering<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Got the picture yet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you think you have no trouble digesting wheat, it is\nstill very wise to avoid conventional wheat as much as possible in your diet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Must Avoid Toxic Wheat No Matter What<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The bottom line is that avoidance of conventional wheat in the\nUnited States is absolutely imperative even if you don\u2019t currently have a\ngluten allergy or wheat sensitivity. The increase in the amount of\nglyphosate applied to wheat closely correlates with the rise of celiac disease\nand gluten intolerance. Dr. Seneff points out that the increases in these\ndiseases are not just genetic in nature, but also have an environmental cause\nas not all patient symptoms are alleviated by eliminating gluten from the diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The effects of deadly glyphosate on your biology are so insidious\nthat lack of symptoms today means literally nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t have problems with wheat now, you will in the future\nif you keep eating conventionally produced, toxic wheat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Eat Wheat Safely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Obviously, if you\u2019ve already developed a sensitivity or allergy\nto wheat, you must avoid it.  Period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, if you aren\u2019t celiac or gluten sensitive and would like to\nconsume this ancestral food safely, you can do what we do in our home. We\nsource organic, naturally low in gluten, unhybridized Einkorn wheat for breadmaking, pancakes, cookies etc. Please\nnote that einkorn is not to be confused with the more general term farro, which\nincludes emmer and spelt, which are both hybridized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we eat out or are purchasing food from the store,\nconventional wheat products are rejected without exception. This despite the\nfact that we have no gluten allergies whatsoever in our home \u2013 yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am firmly convinced that if we did nothing, our entire family\nat some point would develop sensitivity to wheat or autoimmune disease in some\nform due to the toxic manner in which it is processed and the glyphosate\nresidues that are contained in conventional wheat products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Are You Going to Do About Toxic Wheat?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

How did you react to the news that US wheat farmers are using\nRoundup, not just to kill weeds, but to dry out the wheat plants to allow for\nan earlier, easier and bigger harvest and that such a practice causes\nabsorption of toxic glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and other\nherbicides, right into the wheat kernels themselves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you feel outraged and violated like I did? How will you implement\na conventional wheat-avoidance strategy going forward even if you haven\u2019t yet\ndeveloped a problem with gluten or wheat sensitivity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about other crops where Roundup is used as a pre-harvest\ndessicant such as barley, sugar cane, rice, seeds, dried beans and peas,\nsugar cane, sweet potatoes, and sugar beets?  Will you only be buying\nthese crops in organic form from now on to avoid this modern, man-made scourge?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So many mistakes in this article makes me wonder how many more\ndid I miss. Any crop sprayed with roundup is not \u201cdrenched\u201d it is applied at a\nrate of .5 litres per acre of roundup in 5 gallons per acre of water. Of that\n.5 litres of product there is approximately 360 grams per litre of active\ningredient. Hardly drenching I would say. Roundup is not used as an i crop weed\ncontrol herbicide. If it was there would be no crop to harvest as the wheat\nplant will die. There is no roundup ready wheat varieties registered for use in\nNorth America. Roundup does not cause a wheat plant to \u201crelease\u201d more seeds.\nThe wheat kernels are already there. The combine threshes the kernels out of\nthe wheat head. This statement proves the misinformed statements of your\nresearcher from MIT.

The mechanisms described in the _Entropy_ paper you link to can\u2019t\nexplain most of the anecdotal evidence you cite. The paper describes a\npotential mechanism for chronic issues, where wheat products are a delivery\nmechanism for glyphosate; it does not make any case at all for proximate\nincitement of distress, which is what your anecdotes describe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If that paper does indeed describe the mechanism that\u2019s at work\nin a particular case of dietary sensitivity to wheat products, we should also\nsee a lot of sensitivity to other products, as well, since what\u2019s being\ndemonstrated is a systematic corruption of the gut biome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been a kinesiology practitioner for 20 years. In that time\nI have found that about half the clients I see with a wheat intolerance in fact\nhave a pesticide intolerance; they do OK on organic wheat products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
